MARCH 09
We have successfully secured funding from the Big Lottery Fund. In partnership with North West Kent CVS and Swale CVS, we have received a grant of £461,100 to deliver a 3 year training project to volunteers and staff in the voluntary and community sector of North Kent . The aim is to build capacity within the organisations of this sector strengthening the infrastructure and supporting improvements in the provision of services to the local community. A minimum of 160 training events and self-teach toolkits will be devised to cover all aspects of running a community organisation. This may include subjects such as fundraising, roles of a trustee, employment law / HR good practice, negotiation skills, quality systems, Charity Commission requirements, first aid, basic sign language, equality and diversity, disability awareness/DDA to give just a taste. The programme will be flexible and responsive and local organisations are invited to suggest ideas for courses that they need. A Learning Network Forum will also be supported for the exchange of ideas, information and sharing good practice – the forum can be signed upto on the NKTS website. Alison Dyke, Manager of North Kent Training Service and who will be managing the delivery of the service for the CVS Partnership, said “I am delighted that the training needs of the Voluntary and Community Sector are being recognised. The VCS do a huge amount of specialist work for local communities on a very limited budget and they need to have the opportunity to develop their skills as much as any multi-million pound company. Hats off to the Big Lottery for supporting the local community.” The programme of training is due to start in Sept 09 and further details of this can be obtained by contacting: NKTS at CVS Medway 01634 818036 via our Contact page North West Kent CVS 01474 354479 email main@nwkcvs.org Swale CVS 01795 473828 email office@swalecvs.co.uk The Big Lottery Fund distributes half of the National Lottery good cause funding across the UK. The fund is committed to bringing real improvements to communities and the lives of people most in need.
SEP 08 North Kent Training Service Annual Awards Event - Sept 2008 Martin Featherstone compèred the event and introduced Cllr Ted Baker, Deputy Mayor of Medway, and Paul Clark MP who both graciously opened the event with words of praise for the Training Service and for the volunteers and VCS staff who had achieved qualifications in diverse and complex subjects in order to better serve their community groups.
Julie Elsadany of Learning and Skills Council who had funded the qualifications supported by the training service, spoke of the excellent achievements of NKTS over the last 4 years and commended Alison and her team for their significant successes. Targets had not only been met but exceeded earning additional funding for the project. Certificates were awarded to learners in a diverse range of qualifications including Coaching Certificate for Angling, Certificate in Counselling, C&G Quilting and Certificate in Leading Chair-based Exercises. All with the purpose of helping and supporting communities and groups with specific needs. Sue Blanchard, IAG tutor, introduced the Learner of the Year Award. This year there were joint winners. Jean Brooks of Strood Community Project and Angie Frost of Prospects had both overcome considerable personal difficulties to achieve a full level 3 qualification in Information Advice and Guidance. A special commendation was also given to June Deller of Kent Association for the Blind who had, within the space of 1 year, progressed in her learning from short 1 day courses, through short accredited courses and then taking a full qualification in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. She excelled in this course, achieving a level 4 instead of the intended level 3. She was invited back as a guest lecturer on the next course. June is now undertaking a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care. Leon Jenkins of Gateway Knowledge Alliance and Ahmad Eslami of Training To Gain were guest speakers at the event to demonstrate the many ways in which learning is both crucial to this sector, for the economic survival and development in this region and how learning is being made more accessible through the funding streams that exist. Particular thanks must go to CVS core staff, Martin, Laura, Yee and Catherine, for the wonderful support they gave to Alison on the day enabling this event to run so smoothly. To find out more about how you could participate in training courses from 1 day tasters to full qualifications, contact Ruth, Training and Development Officer, to ask about the current programme. If you are unwaged/unemployed some courses may be free of charge.
